Do I also need Gasket Sealant with my Paper Gasket ?

Hi I am in the process of fitting a new Water pump/Coolant pump to my car, I have removed the old Water/coolant pump and cleaned the engine block however I have noticed that the old gasket seems to be metal, my new Water/Coolant pump came with only a paper gasket,so do I also need to use gasket sealant with it? as in the Haynes Manual it makes no reference to any Gasket Sealant only Gasket ??? Thanks in advance
