Is this a good explication on the colinization of Europeans on the Native Americans. It is also about religion
The garden of elm trees that fills the hospital with life parallels the colonization of the Anglo Saxons on America and the taking over of religions. The garden of elm trees are completely “ripped out of the ground” and are replaced by “fragile…new trees”. This replacement of trees corresponds to the substitution and alteration of Native American culture and religion to the Judeo-Christian beliefs of the Anglo Saxons. The garden represents all the Native Americans culture and religion, and the new trees symbolize the replacement of culture and religion. The Judeo-Christian religion alters and ruins the interpretation of the Native American creation myth. Dr. Hovaugh is “burdened with inexplicable remorse and guilt” (King 77-78). This parallels the sorrow that the Native Americans feel towards the immigration of the Judeo-Christian beliefs, and the power it has over the Native Americans. Each tree in the garden represents the lifestyle of each native.
